DISCOVER CENTRAL AUSTRALIA | OCTOBER 2026

HOT MONTHLY TIPS FROM OUR GOOD FRIENDS AT TOURISM CENTRAL AUSTRALIA

October brings with it plenty of energy to Central Australia. From world-class Aboriginal art exhibitions and workshops to a milestone sporting celebration, and big red desert landscapes begging to be explored, Alice Springs is the place to be this spring.

Art takes centre stage with Desert Mob, one of Australia’s longest-running celebrations of contemporary Aboriginal art.

The 2026 exhibition brings together work from artists across the desert regions, with the program also featuring the Vincent Lingiari Art Award (VLAA). This year’s award marks 50 years of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NT) 1976, with the exhibition theme ‘Our Country, Our Culture: 50 Years of Land Rights’.

Both exhibitions are on display at Araluen Arts Centre through the month, making it a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the art of remote communities.

It’s game on! The Alice Springs Masters Games returns for its 40th anniversary, turning the town into a week-long celebration of sport, competition and community. With more than 25 sports on the program, expect plenty of action. Plus, you don’t have to be an athlete to get involved! The atmosphere around town is reason enough to head along, cheer from the sidelines or volunteer and soak up the buzz.

And when you’ve had your fill of competition and culture? October is a great time to experience Central Australia’s landscapes before summer really cranks up.

Get out early for a hike in the West Macs, tackle a section of the Larapinta Trail, explore Alice Springs’ walking and cycling trails, or simply find a spectacular spot to watch the desert light change at sunrise or sunset.

Art, sport, adventure and a whole lot of red dirt – October is looking pretty good in the Red Centre.
