DISCOVER CENTRAL AUSTRALIA | AUGUST 2026
HOT MONTHLY TIPS FROM OUR GOOD FRIENDS AT TOURISM CENTRAL AUSTRALIA
AUGUST MEANS WINTER is slowly approaching its end, a season many locals consider the best time of year to be outdoors.
Crisp mornings give way to sunny days perfect for exploring, whether that's tackling a section of the Larapinta Trail or wandering one of the many walking tracks around town before enjoying a coffee in the sunshine after your morning adventure. For the brave, even the icy waterholes are hard to resist.
For a weekend escape, the East MacDonnell Ranges are an excellent destination, with 2WD-accessible Trephina Gorge Nature Park offering a range of scenic walks, beautiful waterholes and peaceful camping. Those with a 4WD can venture further to Arltunga Historical Reserve before continuing on to Ruby Gap Nature Park.

If you're looking to get off the beaten track, Owen Springs Reserve offers another side of the Red Centre. Just south of Alice Springs, its network of 4WD tracks, bush camping areas and secluded spots, including Redbank Waterhole, provide a rewarding escape without travelling too far from town.
August is also one of the busiest months on the events calendar. The month begins with the Desert Harmony Festival in Tennant Creek over the Picnic Day long weekend, bringing together music, art, culture and community.
Later in the month, the Run Larapinta Stage Race welcomes runners from across Australia and overseas to experience some of the country's most spectacular trail running.
Cyclists take on the region's rugged landscapes during the Shimano Gravel Muster Stage Race, while the Red Dirt Desert Poetry Festival offers a slower pace, celebrating storytelling and the unique voices of the outback.
Whether you're chasing a finish line, discovering a new trail, sitting around a campfire or simply soaking up the winter sunshine, August is a reminder to make the most of the season before the warmer days return. For now, the Red Centre is at its very best.
