SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY returns to the Darwin Entertainment Centre stage with momenta – the latest work by Choreographer and Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela.

By Tierney White

From the most tender exchanges to an intense physical storm, audiences bear witness to an extraordinary force of movement, striking individuality and powerful unity, escalating to a joyous release.

"momenta is a testament to the ephemeral yet profound connections that weave through all of our lives. From the most tender exchanges to an intense physical storm, the dancers traverse the beauty and complexity of the human experience,” Bonachela says.

"It's a deeply personal exploration, as we invite audiences to join us on a journey that speaks to the very essence of what it means to be alive, where pure movement becomes a language of connection and expression.”

Sydney Dance Company is always a hit with the local crowd, and nationally and internationally, with many enthralled by their triple-bill performance of Ascent in 2023 as some of the country’s most mesmerising and able-bodied dancers defied physical limitations. Riley Fitzgerald has been dancing with the company since 2019 and says it’s a special family to be part of.

“Being a company member has always been a dream of mine, ever since high school, actually. Getting to be part of a company where I admired so many of the dancers, and I watched so many of them growing up, it is always a special place."

momenta is Bonachela’s newest full-length work since Impermanence in 2020, one Fitzgerald says is very special.

“For me, it’s quite a significant piece because it’s been a few years since Raf’s created a full-length project like this,” he says.

“The work speaks to the cosmic, and momenta is the plural of the word momentum, it’s the quantity of motion of the moving body, so we’re delving into all of these ideas of gravity and velocity and things, how we can really embody these ideas physically … it really sets up a universe where I think we can all really respond intuitively and with impulse, and a great deal of energy, which is really exciting I think.”

This combination of Bonachela’s signature choreographic style, Nick Wales’ haunting soundscapes, Elizabeth Gadsby’s incredible set design and Damien Cooper’s striking lighting, results in a performance sure to leave audiences in awe.

For all involved, on stage and in seats, momenta invites you to rejoice in the beauty and fragility of our shared humanity.
