Yuck Circus

Yuck Circus aren't lightly throwing around women’s issues – they’re literally throwing women.

The award-winning Western Australian company are a powerhouse of female circus performers ready to kick art in the face in their first ever show in Darwin.

With loads of humour, Yuck rips into the uncomfortable using high-flying acrobatics, absurd confessions and groovy dancing to expose the trials and tribulations of being a young woman growing up in Australia.

Yuck Circus Director Georgia Deguara says when she got her cast together, they went for their tried and true formula, just writing about what they found funny.

“Everyone in the cast is from regional towns all over Australia, so we based a lot of the comedy on stuff that’s from our lives.“

“We were like, ‘oh, we get catcalled all the time,’ or, ‘remember that time we all went binge drinking,’ all mashed together with a very Australian, gendered lens.”

Think Flight of the Conchords meets Kath and Kim crossed with Cirque du Soleil – with Aussie cultural references galore. It’s one hour of flips, pokes, and in-jokes, and an uncensored creative response to the current cap on international touring.

“When we go overseas we have to do a lot of work to change the wording and the brand names in our shows to make it accessible, but with this show, we didn’t give it two thoughts.

“We just really gun the larrikin humour, it’s our calling card really.”

Deguara says this definitely isn’t a girls-only show either – with its relatable comedy gold and crazy flips, even Dazza from down the road is in for a good time.

“It’s a nod to women’s experiences, but it’s for everyone – their partners, their mums, their nieces and nephews.

“We definitely aren’t characters pretending to be someone else, it’s actually just us, in our grundies, havin’ a yarn. I think that’s the core Australian reference. That is us.”
