Comics' Corner – June 2021
Over the past year, Darwin has experienced something of a comedy renaissance, a new breed of outrageously talented young comedians coming to a stage near you. Graeme Lewis recently opened one of Darwin’s hottest new comedy nights, G-Spot Comedy, so Will Crawford caught up with him for a yarn.
Graeme, tell us, how did you get into comedy?
I love comedy, storytelling and joke writing. I have watched comedy since I was very young. Me and my brother grew up on Eddie Murphy’s Delirious and RAW.
How do you write new material?
Generally with a pen... No, that’s a tough question because it’s a combination of observation, planning and just playing around. I often come up with strange ideas, I write it out and then I spit ball it on stage to see where it can go.
I also try lots of stuff out on my girlfriend. It’s a real combination of planning and improvising. But seriously, often I will write the idea and then go on stage and try it out.
What comedians do you love?
Another tough question because there are too many to choose from! Mark Normand has some incredible stuff on YouTube. As a kid, I was clearly an Eddy Murphy fan.
Tell us about G-Spot Comedy?
You can find it downstairs at Landmark on the last Thursday of every month. You can expect a night of storytelling, jokes and laughs from some of the hottest comedians in Darwin. It goes for 90 minutes, so you can come out and be home before 10pm. Check out the Facebook page for upcoming gigs!
What advice would you give to others interested in stand up comedy?
As my partner said to me, “if you think your so f---ing funny, get up there!”
