Australian Burlesque Festival

AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS’ hiatus from touring to the Top End, The Australian Burlesque Festival is back with some big names and big costumes.

Director and performer Dolores Daiquiri tells us everything we need to know.

We’re stoked the Burlesque Fest is coming back – what can we expect?
We’re really excited to bring a brand new show to Darwin with some amazing award-winning interna-tional performers. The show itself will be a classic variety burlesque show with some comedy, amazing glamorous costumes and a fabulous fun night.

Who will we see on stage?
We’ve got Sweetpea from the USA – she’s a powerhouse performer and does jaw-dropping performances. Chris Oh’s from Europe and is quite a big deal – he’s originally from New Zealand and a trained ballet dancer, and taking the world by storm. We’ve also got Diesel Darling from Sydney and local performers from Vintage Doll. We’re bringing some pretty spectacular artists to the stage.

Burlesque seems to be getting more and more popular, what sparked your love for it?
I’ve been a burlesque performer for 18 years now. I’ve always been interested in the aesthetic and I really love the pin-up style. When I went to the US 18 years ago, there was a big revival in L.A. When I came back, I mentioned it to a friend and we started when there weren’t that many performers in Melbourne.

What keeps you coming back?
I love the glamour and the not-so-glamour of the art form itself; you can create your own costumes, music and performances. You’re really in control of your own art.

Have you been surprised to see how much the scene has grown?
I figured it would slowly start to increase in popularity and more and more people would get involved. It slowly got bigger and took off, and now it’s quite big. It’s wonderful, and there are so many shows and performers.
