Battle of the School Bands

SINCE 2009, NT Music School has given young musicians from Territory schools the chance to showcase their talents through the annual Battle of the School Bands competition.

The highly anticipated competition allows young performers to flex their live performance muscles, an opportunity that is a first for many participants, with the overall winners going on to share the stage with some big names at the annual BASSINTHEGRASS Music Festival.

After a successful online competition in 2020, NT Music School’s Simon Pedder says they’re looking forward to showcasing all finalists in front of a live crowd at Darwin Railway Club, finalists progressing through heats in Alice Springs, Darwin, Katherine and Nhulunbuy.

“Teachers have commented that NT students are looking forward to once again performing live to audiences,” he says.

“This an excellent way for young people to get their music heard throughout the NT – and the rest of the world with a live web-cast set for the final.”

After a record number of applicants in 2020, the competition hasn’t escaped the effects of the pandemic.

“Coming out of a largely COVID affected year, the pool of applicants for 2021 have been much smaller than in previous years, which I believe is a legacy from this pandemic,” says Pedder.

“However, the high level of musicianship and stagecraft of our young musicians has not been affected…which is a real testament to the skills of our NT teachers and students alike.”

There are a range of categories including Band, Soloist/Duo, Best Song, Encouragement Award, Best Bio Video and the People’s Choice Award. Head to the Rails and treat your ears to some of the brightest young talents the Territory has to offer.
