Tropical Kitchen

Jamie Lewis leads guided tours of Darwin's Parap and Rapid Creek markets as part of Darwin Festival this month, followed by a cooking class and plenty of good conversation over lunch.

“The Tropical Kitchen Market Tour is an interactive experience that draws from my memories of Singapore, the cultural landscape of Darwin, and of course, the market itself,” says Lewis.

“It is storytelling layered with a guided encounter with market produce, people, sounds, smells and textures.”

Lewis is reluctant to name a favourite market stallholder, but there is one who is close to her heart.

“Por-Por (which means granny), who can be found making paw paw salad at Parap on Saturdays and then at Rapid Creek selling her produce on Sundays, is built very much like my own grandmother back in Singapore. She has the same cheeky smile!"
