Rapid Creek Festival
Within the northern suburbs of Darwin is Rapid Creek – a spetacular jewel where, beneath the thick rainforest canopy, fresh
water bubbles over rapids to the Arafura Sea.
For millennia, Rapid Creek has been sacred to the Larrakia people – a fertility ground where the women gathered upstream for ceremony. Downstream, near the Rapid Creek mouth, the men gathered for initiation. The creek provided fresh water for market gardens for the young settlement of Darwin.
Directly after Cyclone Tracy, Rapid Creek was the only source of drinking water for thousands of people. The inaugural Rapid Creek Festival is the perfect excuse to get up close and personal with this beautiful waterway.
With music, face painting and children’s activities, nature walks, a photography and art competition, information and food stalls, everyone's invited to enjoy this free celebration of one of Darwin's spectacular natural wonderlands.
