BIG STORIES, SHORT FRAMES

Celebrating 35 years, after a stop in Alice Springs in May, Flickerfest hits the Top End, giving Katherine and Darwin audiences a window into the hottest contemporary shorts from at home and across the world.

WORDS BROOKE GIBBS

FLICKERFEST IS AUSTRALIA'S only Academy Qualifying and BAFTA recognised Short Film Festival. It’s the country’s largest Australian and International short film competition, screening the best of shorts from Australia and around the world.

Unique identity and culture is honoured with the Best of Australian Shorts. Catch a collection of stunning shorts supported by big names both in front of and behind the camera. Highlights include the hybrid LGBTQIA+ animation The Fling, by Darwin born and raised filmmaker Jemma Cotter.

Starring Zachary Ruane, The Fling is a stop-motion horror rom-com about two women on a chaotic date. Another highlight is the moving drama Tuesday, which won best female director and stars Peter Phelps.

The Fling

“It’s such an incredible opportunity to play in a festival like Flickerfest. It’s a well-respected film festival in the industry, and it’s so rewarding to be playing along with other films that are of such excellent quality,” says Cotter.

“It gives a bit of a snapshot into where the Australian film industry is at the moment, which I think is looking very positive and optimistic.”

The First Nations Spotlight Shorts features seven powerful films from some of the brightest voices in First Nations cinema today, curated from the recent competition in Bondi. These compelling stories take you on a memorable journey through voices that inspire, move and captivate.

From powerful Indigenous voices to some of the best in Australian shorts, these films offer a heartfelt and entertaining glimpse into stories from across the country. Whether you’re kicking back under the stars at the Deckie or enjoying the big screen in Katherine, it’s the perfect chance to mingle with fellow film lovers and celebrate the joy of great storytelling.
