Flix in the Wet

Our friends at Deckchair Cinema have packed away the deckchairs, strung up the lights and battened down the hatches in preparation for their closure over the Wet season. But if you can’t live without that incredible Darwin Film Society programming, we have great news for you…

Flix in the Wet returns in January to showcase cinematic gems on the big screen, this time, moving to new digs at Darwin Entertainment Centre (DEC). We can’t wait to spend some rainy Sundays at the DEC-chair Cinema!

High Ground
Set against the stunning landscapes of 1930s Arnhem Land, High Ground chronicles young Aboriginal man Gutjuk, who in a bid to save the last of his family, teams up with ex-soldier Travis to track down Baywara – the most dangerous warrior in the Territory, also his uncle.

In very exciting news, Darwin Film Society has teamed up with Darwin Entertainment Centre to present the Red Carpet NT Premiere on Jan 14. More information, including special guests, will be announced soon.

Lucky Grandma
A chain-smoking, newly widowed 80-year-old grandma is eager to live life as an independent woman. When a local fortune teller predicts a most auspicious day in her future, Grandma decides to head to the casino. A lucky day on the tables lands her in the middle of a Chinatown gang war.

In 1970, the Miss World competition took place in London, hosted by US comedy legend, Bob Hope. Miss World was the most-watched TV show on the planet with over 100 million viewers. The newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement achieved overnight fame by invading the stage and disrupting the live broadcast of the competition.

The Furnace
1897 Western Australia. To escape a harsh existence and return home, a young Afghan cameleer partners with a mysterious bushman on the run with two 400oz Crown-marked gold bars. Together, the unlikely pair must outwit a zealous police sergeant and his troopers in a race to reach a secret furnace.

A powerful documentary that interweaves freshly uncovered archival footage, personal photographs and lively personal accounts from activists during the Women’s Liberation Movement (1965 -1975).
