Deckchair Opens for 2019
It’s back! The Deckchair Cinema has dusted off the chairs and worded-up the possums to prepare for an influx of movie lovers.
The season kicks off a week earlier than usual with If Beale Street Could Talk, the highly-acclaimed follow-up film from Barry Jenkins, after the success of Moonlight in 2016.
Deckie general manager James Parker says a particularly dry Wet season means they can sneak opening night in a week earlier than usual.
“When it’s not raining people don’t understand why we’re closed,” he says.
“We’re taking a bit of a risk (with the weather), but hopefully it goes well.”
Parker says there are a lot of great films for the first program, but he’s eagerly awaiting Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse.
“It got the Oscar for best animated film - it’s just a groundbreaking new visual style,” he says.
“They rewrote the book on animation when making the this film.”
For die-hard Deckchair lovers who want to give back, there’s also a working bee to spruce up the venue before it opens.
