Flix in the Wet
As the rain pours down, and the city steams up – there’s nothing better than grabbing some popcorn and sitting back in the air-conditioned comfort of Darwin’s BCC Cinemas to enjoy the delightful pick ’n’ mix of films selected by the Darwin Film Society this Wet season.
And this February you can look forward to two extra special combos, with a Middle Eastern double and a Bad Behaviour double on the bill.
Your Middle Eastern journey starts with In Between; an empowering tale of three young Arab Israeli women who share an apartment in Tel Aviv, chronicling their journey as they balance youth culture with traditional expectations.
City of Ghosts follows, with the harrowing yet hopeful tale of what happened when Syrian activists banded together, following the taking of Raqqa by ISIS in 2014.
Café Cinema complements this cultural feast, with special guest host Nadeem Turkia, owner of local food truck Flavours of Damascus. Enjoy Turkia’s famous ‘falafel’s made with love’, and join in the group discussion exploring questions raised in the film.
Flix in the Wet then hits pause for the Travelling Film Festival, resuming the following weekend with a very naughty double feature.
Ocean’s Eleven meets The Breakfast Club in the multi award winning crime thriller Bad Genius – the story of a straight-A student who devises an internationally successful exam-cheating scheme.
The Teacher completes your afternoon’s bad education, with a wildly entertaining black comedy inspired by the true story of a Communist-era school teacher who manipulated her pupils and their families for unprecedented personal gain.
To wrap up a month of fine cinema, catch Australian comedy-drama What If It Works.
