A DIFFerent Direction - Meet Tim Parish
HELD OVER EIGHT TROPICAL DAYS AND NIGHTS AT THE DECKIE EACH SEPTEMBER IS THE DARWIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. THIS YEAR SEES THE APPOINTMENT OF A NEW FESTIVAL DIRECTOR – MEET TIM PARISH.
What is your background in film?
I started making short films when I was studying Fine Arts at Charles Darwin University many years ago, and since then I’ve been making short films, music videos and documentaries all over Australia, as well as experimenting with outdoor projection art, video art installations and live audiovisual performances in theatre and festivals.
What drew you to film?
My two core art forms are writing and visual art, so when I discovered filmmaking, it felt like the perfect medium to blend both passions. I love how film has the power to immerse us in imaginary worlds, but also the way it can convey important messages by holding a mirror that reflects and reorders the real world back to us.
Why is DIFF such an important festival?
Darwin International Film Festival is dedicated to showcasing the best international films and documentaries being made globally, including showcasing brave new works that may not otherwise be screened in cinemas. Film festivals such as DIFF also offer opportunities to foster the local film industry, by showcasing new work and sharing skills through our extensive workshop program.
Congratulations on your new role – how does it feel to be DIFF Director?
I’m excited to have the opportunity to help grow the festival so that it can further embrace both the local film industry, and the new kinds of filmmaking trends that are evolving around the world. This year we are introducing a range of new dimensions to the festival, which will help broaden our understanding of the contemporary art of cinema. Very exciting!
Are there any changes to this year’s DIFF you’re allowed to tell us about?
Darwin audiences can expect some bold new elements to the festival that may surprise them! These include live audiovisual performances, 360 degree virtual reality experiences, outdoor projections across the city, and a live theatrical performance based on a famous screenplay with local actors.
We are also introducing a brand new film industry showcase called the Capricornia Film Awards. This is to celebrate the best work being produced across Northern Australia and exposes the audience to the work of vibrant emerging filmmakers producing up here.
