The Gurindji freedom banners celebrate the 1966 Wave Hill Walk-off, when Vincent Lingiari AM led Gurindji, Mudbura, Bilnarra, Ngariyman and Warlpiri peoples on a strike from Wave Hill Station. This industrial dispute over appalling work and living conditions at Wave Hill Station became a demand by the Gurindji for the return of their traditional lands. It eventuated in the first historic handback of lands to First Nations Australians, 1975 and the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act, 1976.
