NT Youth Week’s 2019 Ambassador

Rochelle Cadbry has seen what the world has to offer but the pull of Darwin was too strong to resist.

After living interstate and overseas for the last four years, Cadbry, 23, has brought her dance practice and passion back to the town she loves the most.

We had a chat with Cadbry about being this year’s Ambassador and what Youth Week means to her.

This year’s theme is ‘Living In Colour’ - what does that mean to you?

It can be interpreted as living a vibrant, inspired and happy life in the NT, and that encompasses diversity and acceptance and celebrating all that comes with that.

But I look at it in a different way and think about it as living in colour in our reality and putting the digital world away for a bit. We can get very tangled up in our devices so for me living in colour is about living in the physical realm.

What role does Youth Week have in the community?

It gives young people the opportunity to express their ideas and views, and it’s a chance to recognise and celebrate the positive contributions that young people make in the NT.

You’ve been away from Darwin for a while, what drew you back and inspired you to be a Youth Week Ambassador?

Living overseas was an incredible experience but I wanted to give back to the community that’s given me so much and made me realise my potential.

When I saw the call out for an ambassador I thought it would be a great opportunity to help other young people realise they have potential, too.

How has the Darwin community helped you pursue your passions?

What I love about Darwin is that everyone is willing to give it a crack. The most influential factor was that my teachers never put a ceiling on me, which had a huge impact on me and helped me in my journey.

What’s your hot tip for Youth Week?

I’m really looking forward to the YMCA pool party out at Palmy -  I’ve heard rave reviews about it. And the dance show I’m involved in, Brave, will be great, too.
