Hear stories from incarcerated prisoners across the Territory in an exhibition aimed at supporting rehabilitation and reducing reoffending.

BEHIND THE WIRE returns to Darwin for the first time since 2019, showcasing powerful artworks by currently incarcerated prisoners from across the Northern Territory.

This long-standing initiative showcases artwork created by people in custody as part of the Department of Corrections’ education and skills programs.

The exhibition, displayed at the historic site of Fannie Bay Gaol, demonstrates how participation in creative and cultural arts supports the development of practical and transferable skills, encourages personal growth, and provides meaningful pathways to learning, employment and reintegration.

Following its pause, the exhibition returns with 110 paintings and 66 sculptures created by artists from correctional centres across the Territory. Charles Darwin University Art Lecturer Susan McDonnell says painting and sculpture are powerful tools for rehabilitation.

“Both forms of art can lead to careers, and when released, they can have genuine careers in the art industry. Creativity and self-discovery help build positive and productive lives,” she says.

Featuring unique works from more than a dozen artists, the exhibition includes traditional Aboriginal painting, contemporary art, and sculpture. McDonnell says the paintings are mostly traditional Top End paintings characterised by intricate cross hatching and natural earth pigments.

“The stories are of ancient Dreamtime narratives, depicting regional wildlife and spirits. There are also landscapes depicting local landscapes and animals. The sculptures are assemblages. The artists have skilfully welded found objects and recycled materials into a blend of industrial waste and whimsical, playful animals.”
