Comics' Corner - Mel Little

MEL LITTLE IS one of the funniest humans getting around Darwin. A charismatic presenter on Territory FM and an entertaining MC, this wild local comedian is the driving force behind a new series of stand up shows, Schnitz N Giggles. Will Crawford caught up with her for a chat.

Tell us – what did you get up to during lockdown?
I was lucky – my radio job continued. I set up a home studio and was able to broadcast from there. But I lost my trivia nights and regular MC gigs. I’m way too social for my own good, so not being able to see my friends regularly was tough.

What were some cool things you noticed online during that time?
I loved the COVID-concerts, with so many artists performing from their lounge rooms. Darwin Live did a fantastic series of online gigs with local musicians and comedians, making sure they were paid. Amazing!

You’ve recently produced a series of stand up shows called Schnitz N Giggles, can you tell us a bit about it?
Who doesn’t love a schnitty and a good giggle? We have so many talented funny humans here in the NT, and I just wanted to share a stage with all of them, so this was the easiest way I could come up with to achieve that and also get fed. If you come along, expect a big schnitz and even bigger giggles!

How did you get into stand up? What was your first stand up gig like?
I was living on the Sunny Coast in QLD and the local radio station was running a comp called Funny Bugger. My mates encouraged me to enter, but my then partner didn’t... He didn’t think I was funny at all! First prize was a trip to Scotland to perform at The Edinburgh Comedy Festival.

I made a deal with him – if I lost, he got to say “I told you so”, but if I won, I’d take my brother to Scotland and he could stay home. It was tough doing stand up for the first time but I had something to prove and you know what? My brother Heath and I had a blast in Scotland!
