CANCELLED – La Boheme and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DARWIN SCREENINGS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED.
No need to dress up and spend the big bucks for a night at one of the world’s best opera houses. The phenomenon of big screen opera is coming your way.
Throw back the popcorn and join in the applause as The Royal Opera House (ROH) in London screens beloved opera La Boheme and ballet, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at Casuarina BCC Cinemas.
Even members of the ROH orchestra can’t see each stitch on the soprano’s cape or the twinkle in her eye when her lover enters stage right – but these filmed performances capture the whole experience in jaw-dropping detail. You’ll feel like you’re there, and then some.
First performed in 1897, Puccini’s La Boheme is touted both as the one to see if you’re new to the genre, and the favourite of seasoned connoisseurs.
According to conductor and ROH Music Director Antonio Pappano, it features some of opera’s most romantic music. He goes so far as to describe it as a masterpiece, likening Puccini’s contribution to the art form as akin to Hitchcock’s influence on film.
The gist of the story? Rodolfo, a penniless poet in 19th century Paris, meets Mimì, a seamstress, and they fall passionately in love. But their happiness is threatened when Rodolfo learns that Mimì is gravely ill. A romantic tragedy for the ages.
The newest incarnation of this Italian classic includes an incredible young cast and goose bumps are guaranteed when the vocal chords of Australian soprano and rising star Nicole Car are unleashed in sound surround. Top Enders will remember Car’s stunning live performance with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra in 2014 at their annual Opera Gala.
If pirouettes are more your thing, Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is up for your viewing pleasure, as performed by The Royal Ballet.
Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s legendary novel, Wheeldon’s Wonderland is an explosion of colour, stage magic and inventive, sophisticated choreography.
You’ll see Alice getting swept off her feet by the Knave of Hearts, on the run for stealing tarts and countless strange creatures including a tap dancing Mad Hatter.
These are world-class performances, coming out of one of the world’s best houses, and an enchanting, novel and new cinematic experience for all the family.
