Comics' Corner – September

The curtains have fallen on the Darwin Festival and Hanuman has cleaned off the last ghee splatter from its bamboo kitchen but, like a phoenix rising from the ashes of your festival memories, several amazing new comedy shows emerge to breathe life into your humdrum lives.

By Will Crawford.

That's right, September is flush with stand up comedic talent, hotter than a Build Up evening, and all you have to do is know where to sniff.

First up, on Wednesday 6 September, local comedy juggernaut Amy Hetherington teams up with her Melbourne stand up soul-mate Kirsty Webeck for the final stop of their NT Comedy Road Trip. This show promises to deliver some genuinely cracking laughs. Think the 1987 Star Wars spinoff and moderate hit Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure but even cuter (and decidedly more funny). Judging by Hetherington's previous uplifting and hilarious shows this is sure to be a night of raucous and infectious laughter.

For the stand up comedy connoisseurs, Top End Comedy presents its monthly stand up showcase at Happy Yess on the first Thursday of the month. September’s theme of ‘families’ will see some exciting new routines from Darwin's emerging superstars.

Lock in Friday 8 September and get down to the Darwin Railway Club in Parap for the Darwin Asylum Seeker Support and Advocacy Network’s (DASSAN) Humanely Hilarious Comedy and Live Auction.

See five of Darwin’s sharpest comic minds egg each other on at a night of high and low class comic banter, featuring the incisive comedy stylings of Nicole Stevens, Ange Wu, Ben Stevenson, Danielle Andrews and my good self. This show will have you laughing and sneezing in equal measure, the comedy sets punctuated by some sultry beats and a hilarious live auction in which you can bid on some wonderfully strange items, including a "comedian comes to roast your boss" prize. This should be one of the craziest nights of the year and all in support of the amazing work of DASSAN.

To wrap up your September, the Beachfront Hotel hosts its regular ‘Laugh out Loud’ series. Featuring four hand picked comedy professionals, it delves into some more adult topics on the last Thursday of the month.

Make sure your September is joyful and as Mr T said, stay in school, cos he pities the fool.
