German Masters
German composers, Bruckner, Brahms and Beethoven, are considered some of the greatest composers of all time. This month, you're invited to bask in the musical brilliance of German Masters, presented by Darwin's premier classical choir Vocalective.
By Lisa Pellegrino
IN A PERFORMANCE conducted by Creative Director, Michael Loughlin, Vocalective showcases the choral works of these 19th Century greats, accompanied by a chamber orchestra.
"These European composers are the ones who have helped create this Western music culture. People like Beethoven and Brahms are very well-known. They're two of the most revered figures in the history of Western music with the works that they've produced,” he says.
Best known for his symphonies, the choir also marks Anton Bruckner’s 200th birthday by performing some of his small-scale works.
"His secular songs are a revelation – captivating melodies with ever-changing harmonies. The Ave Maria is one of his best-known shorter works for an unaccompanied choir. Bruckner's creativity is stunning," Loughlin says.
Classical music enthusiasts can also look forward to hearing Johannes Brahms’ poetic piece, Song of Destiny. Another highlight is undoubtedly Ludwig Van Beethoven's emotionally rich composition Mass in C Major, first performed in 1807.
"I love the interplay between the soloists and the choir and the choral writing, which is straightforward but effective in expressing the mood of the text," says Loughlin.
Vocalective is comprised of 30 skilled Darwin-based singers with a love of classical music. If you've never had the opportunity to see them perform before, this is a perfect time to experience the choir in full force.
"The people who come to our concerts enjoy hearing music that's not necessarily performed frequently in Darwin. Choir music, especially classical choir music, is not performed very much apart from what our group does. So, I think the audiences appreciate it, especially those with an interest in classical music."
In the past, Vocalective has performed music from the French Masters, and look forward to performing compositions from Italy, England and Australia in the future.
For now, bask in the sublime sounds of the German Masters in a night of music, celebration, and classical appreciation.
