Max Fredericks Takes One More Step
MUCH-LOVED LOCAL muso Max Fredericks is taking things to the next level with the release of his aptly titled debut album, One More Step. We caught up with Max ahead of his exciting album launch this month.
Congratulations on your debut album! Can you tell us a bit about it?
It’s been in the making for a while. It’s a diverse album. The first single is very slow. It’s an “I love you song” about my dog [laughs]. The next song is a bit quicker.
I remember Spiderbait had an album that was very diverse, and I loved that album, so I wanted an album that wasn’t the same all the way through.
Would you say it’s quite a personal album?
It is actually. There’s a song I wrote for Mum and Dad about when we were growing up. When we were kids, we didn’t really have much money, but my parents always made me feel like we had everything, even though they didn’t.
People may know you from playing covers around town, but what’s different about playing your own tunes?
I like seeing people’s reactions. It’s a nice feeling to be able to perform your own songs. I don’t do those at the cover gigs – they’re more special, so I tend to save those for support acts.
Who are some of your musical influences?
There are a whole lot of influences – Muse, Coldplay, obviously The Beatles, Crowded House, but then also Jeff Buckley. But I listen to all sorts of stuff. You draw influences from everywhere.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve been listening to a lot of stuff the boys [his sons] have been listening to lately. There’s been a bit of Birds of Tokyo in there and ‘Uprising’ by Muse. Yeah, they’ve got good taste!
