Paul Kelly & Charlie Owen
Australian music heavyweights Paul Kelly and Charlie Owen head to Darwin this December as they take their collaborative project, and new album Death's Datless Night, on the road around the country.
By Chelsea Heaney.
After meeting up at a funeral of a friend, Kelly and Owen decided to work on a collection of songs they were often requested to play at funerals. It also includes tracks they would want played at their own. Whilst perhaps a macabre concept, the songs are livelier than you might expect.
The album reflects that both Kelly and Owen found that songs which are often requested for funerals aren’t usually as somber or gloomy as you might anticipate, but more philosophical. Songs from Cole Porter, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Hank Williams and Lennon/McCartney make up some of the set list, as well as some more traditional pieces.
Kelly and Owen are award winning and talented musicians; each with long standing solo careers and both have featured in well-known Australian bands for decades. The evening offers the chance to see some of country’s most iconic musicians reflecting on mortality through music.
