Kim Koole
As far a country music goes, getting a scholarship to the Academy of Country Music in Tamworth and jamming with Kasey Chambers, Nash Chambers and Ashleigh Dallas is the dream. But it’s no fantasy for Darwin singer/songwriter Kim Koole. The NT song of the Year finalist is a born and bred Territorian with a passion for country music and an impressive music repertoire. She took a moment to catch up with MusicNT.
For those that haven’t heard of Kim Koole what is your music like?
My genre of music is definitely country! I love to write about our fantastic, laid back style of life here in the NT – sometimes serious, but mostly light-hearted songs. I’m a born and bred Territorian, and very proud of that fact, so I really love reflecting that through my music.
How does living in Darwin affect your music and songwriting?
I really love Darwin, I don’t think I could ever leave. Living here inspires a lot of my writing and with Darwin being such a laid back and relaxing place, people respond well to my music. I have noticed the NT music industry growing and developing over the past few years and it is really exciting to be a part of that growth and a part of the Darwin and NT music community.
Got any tips for young musicians about performing and writing music?
Definitely. I could probably write a small book of things that I’ve learnt over the years (and I’m still learning!) For performing, the best thing I can recommend is to have a professionalism about your act, but to also make sure you enjoy yourself on stage. My best tip for songwriting is to keep at it and always take opportunities to further develop your skills through workshops, and take opportunities to receive good constructive criticism.
What’s the best piece of advice (musical or not musical) you’ve been given?
The best piece of advice that fits both of those categories is that no matter how hard you try, you just can’t please everyone. Personally, that’s always been a challenge for me so I always need to remind myself of that one!
What are the plans for Kim Koole for the rest of the year?
My next gig is at the Freds Pass Show on May 13th. I do have a very exciting project in October of this year – I will be recording my debut EP which I’m very much looking forward to. It’s something I have dreamed of doing for a long time. I’m aiming for an EP launch in December this year so keep an eye out for that and come grab a copy!
