Parade Days

IF YOU FANCY A STROLL DOWN DARWIN Festival’s memory lane, you don’t have to travel far.

The Lighthouse in Festival Park is set to become a canvas for a video installation looking back at one of the Festival’s most iconic and nostalgic events – the Bougainvillea Festival’s Grand Parade.

The Parade was an opportunity for the multitude of community groups to create floral floats and decorate bikes, and display them in a procession through the city streets.

This mass community spectacle ran for more than two decades, tracking both the evolution of the Festival from community event to major event on the international arts calendar, as well as the evolution of the city reborn post-Cyclone Tracy.

Local artist Huni Bollger has created this visual journey back in time, with images gathered from the community, the NT News and Northern Territory Library. The result, Parade Days, will light up The Lighthouse from sunset every evening (except Mondays) during the Festival.

The free installation is one of the special events celebrating the Festival’s 40th anniversary.
