IT'S SHOW TIME
The countdown is on. For three action-packed Dry season days, the Royal Darwin Show returns to the Darwin Showgrounds, celebrating an impressive 75 years of Territory tradition.

WHETHER YOU'RE A thrill-seeker chasing your next adrenaline rush, an animal lover looking for cuddly encounters, or simply in it for the show bags, fairy floss and fireworks, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
Animal lovers are spoiled for choice, with baby chicks, goats, sheep, rabbits and calves all making an appearance. If dinosaurs are more your thing, the popular Dinkum Dinosaurs return with their mix of comedy, puppetry and prehistoric fun. Check out giant dinosaur puppets, educational displays and a walking disco-dancing Dilophosaurus that’s guaranteed to steal the spotlight.
The main arena promises plenty of action, too. Outback Jack and his talented animals are back with an entertaining stockman show, while the Holden vs Ford V8 Challenge brings high-speed thrills and plenty of friendly rivalry. Horse lovers can catch some of the Territory’s finest equestrian talent competing across a range of disciplines.
“‘Something for everyone’ really defines the annual Darwin Show. If you’ve never seen a champion chain saw sculptor in action, this will be your chance,” says Show Manager Cherry Court.
“There'll be plenty of changes if patrons have not visited the show for a few years. Among them will be live entertainment at the Bandstand which has evolved dramatically over the years.”
Creatives have plenty to admire in the arts, crafts, cookery and photography displays. From giant pumpkins and orchids to homemade cakes, intricate artworks and award-winning photographs, the pavilions are packed with talent, creativity and a healthy dose of competition.
“All the high-standard exhibitions in the various pavilions showcase the exceptional talents and interests of Territorians,” Court says.
Catch Off The Leash Editor Tierney in the NT media Celebrity Baking Challenge, as she goes head-to-head against other NT media peeps to bake a cake using the fruit of the year, pineapple, judged by a panel of VIP judges.
Local culture also takes centre stage, with the traditional spear-throwing and fire-lighting competitions showcasing Larrakia culture and skills passed down through generations.
Across the grounds, live music, dancers, magicians and performers keep the atmosphere buzzing, while the Royal Darwin Show Country Music Talent Quest offers aspiring musicians the chance to perform for a national scholarship opportunity.
Of course, no Royal Darwin Show would be complete without a sideshow alley, thrilling rides and a bag (or three) stuffed with show bags.
And when the sun goes down on Saturday night? Look to the sky. The spectacular fireworks finale returns, lighting up the Showgrounds, bringing another unforgettable Royal Darwin Show to a close.
