Merrepen Arts Pop Up
GET EXCITED, FOLKS… This month, you’re invited to hit the arts market at Brown’s Mart to peruse the bounty of beautiful creations by artists from Merrepen Arts.
The art centre is located in Nauiyu (Daly River), about 220 clicks south of Darwin. Founded in 1986, Merrepen Arts currently operates with about 130 artists. Artworks are inspired by the natural surroundings of the region, its landscape, colour and light, and designs draw inspiration from the wetlands, plants and animals found nearby.
Merrepen Arts CEO Cathy Laudenbach says the artists are excited to come to the Territory capital.
“We love coming into Darwin to sell our original work. It makes everything more accessible, and customers can meet our artists and make connections with the artwork,” she says.
“We will be bringing our whole gallery to town including paintings, prints, textiles, purses, books, t-shirts, and more. The Brown’s Mart courtyard will be overflowing with Merrepen goodies and artists!”
Despite the challenges of 2020, Cathy says it’s given the artists the opportunity to reset.
“Merrepen has continued on during COVID. It has actually given us a time to restock and rethink our direction. Many of the artists have come up with new designs on canvas and fabric. We have lots of new screens and new exciting colourways in our fabric designs.”
And word to the wise – you should definitely head along to get your mitts on some Merrepen treasures, because this little art centre has some big plans for 2021.
“2021 is looking good for Merrepen! All our artists are inspired to make work and we have lots of plans. We are in a show in Cairns in June and Los Angeles in October!”
