Grey Panthers - Intake Day

There’s no stopping Australia’s longest-running seniors dance group.

Tracks Dance’s Grey Panthers is not only expanding its reach, but is investing back into the next generation of dancers.

Tracks Dance artistic co-director David McMicken says they are changing the intake process due to the popularity of the dance group for over 60s.

With more and more seniors keen to get involved, there will now be special intakes three times a year.

“Last year we got so many new people coming in each week we decided it would be easier to get all the newcomers to start together at the same time,” McMicken says.

“It means they can all get introduced to each other and pick up on the choreography together.”

The popularity has also seen a satellite group start in Batchelor.

“A lot of people are coming from Adelaide River and Noonamah,” McMicken says.

“They’re excited because it’s not only a place to get your fitness hit for the week, it’s also great for socialisation and they feel like they’ve created their own culture and community.”

Each week the group collects small change to raise cash for their youth development fund.

This year the group has raised enough cash to offer three $800 bursaries for young dancers to head down to the Australian Youth Dance Festival in Victoria in July.

“The Australian Youth Dance Festival is a great way for young NT dancers to benchmark themselves,” McMicken says.

“They go down and they realise how good they are, and the rest of Australia loves the energy our young people bring.”

If you’re interested in joining the weekly dance group head on down to the intake in April - but get in touch with Tracks first to register your interest.
