NAIDOC Week Celebrations
Indigenous models will be transformed as part of NAIDOC week celebrations this month.
Aboriginal Bush Traders (ABT) has teamed up with DMKM Beauty Studio to bring their ‘Transformation Tuesdays’ to the venue, with a focus on makeup for all skin-tones and shades.
DMKM owner and Arrernte woman Mena Fenney says models from the DMKM Indigenous Model Initiative will score a makeover from their style guru, Teddy Suphannabutt, and get dolled up in accessories and clothes from ABT to celebrate Indigenous beauty.
“It’s going to be amazing,” she says.
“We can cater to every skin type and shade. Teddy starts off with the basics of how to prepare your skin and then goes through all the tools he’s using and how he’s doing everything – the brushes for blending, the eye shadow and foundation and how to contour your face, which is a big thing in the makeup industry at the moment.”
The live make-up and styling tuto-rial is just one of the NAIDOC Week workshops being run by ABT.
ABT marketing coordinator Matthew Van Roden says it’s a great opportunity to highlight businesses run by Aboriginal Top Enders.
“We thinks it’s a good opportunity to promote the very thing that Aboriginal Bush Traders is about – supporting grassroots and Aboriginal owned and run micro enterprises. It also promotes a dialogue in the community about supporting these businesses,” he says.
“All the activities are supporting Indigenous artists who may not be involved with the infrastructure of arts centres in the Top End and awesome local Indigenous owned and run business doing great things like DMKM.”
