Noonamah Tavern Frog Races

It all started on a lazy Sunday arvo with a couple of patrons, a couple of beers and a bet on two green tree frogs leaping along a concrete path.

Fast-forward three decades and it’s become an NT institution that packs out this iconic bush pub every Melbourne Cup Day and has raised more than $250,000 for local charities.

If you’re looking for an alternative to the usual Melbourne Cup format - this is it. There’s a live band, bubbly on arrival, a $500 fashions on the field prize and of course “the race that hops a nation”.

More than 20 frogs are auctioned off, then put inside a wetted down circle. The first outside the line is the winner, with all proceeds for 2017 going to Variety NT – the Children’s Charity.

Hot tips on how to pick the winning amphibian thoroughbred? According to Events Manager Spokz, “wear your lucky pair of pluggers.”
